Celebration of Literacy continues

As February yields to March, there are still several Celebration of Literacy 2016 events scheduled to help the community follow this year’s theme, “Get Fired Up for Reading.”

Celebration of Literacy is sponsored by Altrusa International of Roseburg and Umpqua Reading Council. One of the signature occasions is the Oregon Regional Battle of the Books, starting at 9 a.m. March 5 at the Roseburg High School Student Center. The regional competition feeds into the Statewide Oregon Battle of the Books taking place April 9 at Chemeketa Community College in Salem.

Parents of young children will also want to attend Bilingual Story Time at 11:15 a.m. March 3 in the Douglas County Library in Roseburg. Guest storyteller Glenn Hansen of Oakland will lead the Spanish/English session with stories, songs and a craft. Admission is free.

In addition to scheduling gatherings and activities, Altrusa of Roseburg has found a literal way to spread the word about reading. As part of Celebration of Literacy, Altrusa has delivered more than 8,000 books to food pantries in nine Douglas County towns. The books will be placed in food baskets during the two weeks of the celebration.

Food pantries receiving books are in Roseburg, Winston/Dillard, Canyonville, Riddle, Glendale, Myrtle Creek, Glide, Drain and Reedsport.

An overview of the schedule with links to specific events can be found here. Not all are open to the general public, but each and every one illustrates that #DCEdMatters!
